All About Traditonal French Farmhouse Cider

posted on 2 January 2012

Here in France at our farm, we make traditional French farmhouse cider, practising the same method as used here for centuries past. This process is not as difficult as everyone thinks. It's also not too tricky once you have obtained the right and traditional equipment. First you will need to collect a wide variety of cider apples, which can also include a small quantity of eating and dessert apples. And, if you are lucky enough to know where to find a crab apple tree, crab apples can also be added in copious quantities to increase the tannin content of you cider. Next you will need what is known as a 'scatter'. This is a mechanical device which crushes the apples into a pulp. The next item you will need to obtain is a cider press. These come in many shapes and sizes, depending on the quantity of apples you need to press and how many trees you have in your orchard or available to you. Once pressed, this cider can be stored in oak barrels and then bottled and enjoyed.

What I Would Change About My House If I Could Afford To

posted on 29 December 2011

For starters, I would have to knock it down to the ground. The house I live in was built in 1958 and shouldn't have ever made it past 1978. I enviously look at all those modern looking self build houses I see that are popular these days. Our house? Infested, thoroughly with little tiny ants, this is not a house of comfort. They crawl all over you in virtually any room. This house has a front wall of faux stone work that looks like Fred Flintstone designed it on a bad day. The back yard is full of little sheds and outbuildings that seem unsightly and inappropriate. The refrigerator doors do not line up right. The smooth range top turns everything cooked on it to slop. The bathrooms are so retro that they feature unrestricted shower heads. Imagine taking a real shower, the kind they used to take in the old days. Unfortunately the water bill is outrageous! Once leveled, I would clear the land and turn it back to the county. Then move into a nice new condo somewhere and be happy.

In Regards to Planning Our Energy Production for the Future

posted on 27 December 2011

Energy demands lately got very high, and it is unlikely that we can cover it only with energy that comes from burning fossil fuels. We must think about other means of providing energy from renewable sources like water, wind, sun and even waves. Hydro plants doesn’t require any resource beside water which is renewable, but tend to drastically change the local geography and wildlife, and that is the reason why they are not considered as pure renewable energy. Then there's the solar panel - solar panels are completely free for operation, but their initial cost for installing is somewhat high. But, if we take in consideration the gain in the next couple of years, we can easily get our investment back, and after that enjoy the free energy. Wind turbines are also completely free for usage, although maybe even more expensive for initial placement. They require higher elevated terrains, but provide much more energy than solar panels.

I Find All Bugs Extremely Frightening

posted on 9 December 2011

I can't stand bugs. They frighten me as they can bite. I have woken up on a number of occasions to find bugs on my face. I can deal with the common house fly easily with fly killer sprays, but other bugs are tougher to get rid of. I have tried a number of sprays however they keep on returning. Maybe I am not using enough spray. I spend a lot of time in my garage and I have lots of trouble with huge spiders. At least once a week I come across a huntsman or some other nasty spider. It is terrifying to see such an ugly spider. In a way I don't like spraying them but I don't feel I can kill it with an object. I bought a spray last month which is quite strong. I think it is actually working as I haven't seen bugs in my home for a month which is quite unusual. It is much better this way as I don't have to wake up with horrible bugs in my bed.

On Controlling Those Deadly Mosquitoes

posted on 18 November 2011

In this part of the world where I am living i.e. PAKISTAN people can be seen suffering from various kinds of diseases like malaria, dengue fever, Congo fever, typhoid etc. these all and various other such like diseases spread through small species like mosquitoes, house flies and bugs etc. While people in the west tend to see pests as literally just pests (annoyances) that can be deal with easily like using fly screens, where I live pests can be killers. People of this part of the world can be protected by effectively controlling the spread and growth of such insects. By doing so not only a large amount of the treatment of people can be saved but people can also be saved form various other problems they use to face while experiencing any of these or any other such kind of disease. A timely, effective, appropriate spray to eradicate such small creatures not only gives confidence to common people but it also help the government agencies to earn good name and respect among the masses. If by any means once a disease, specially a viral disease spreads, it not become very difficult to get control over it but it also causes a severe damage to the confidence and trust of the common people in their respective governments and their concerned agencies. In the recent past the Punjab Province of Pakistan faced the brunt of dengue fever whic not only took the lives of more than 290 people but has also exposed the weekness of the concerned agencies and health officials

Adding Natural Light to an Enclosed Bathroom

posted on 6 November 2011

Having just added some decking joists to our outdoor decking, I am now looking at new projects around the house to get my teeth into. The project that's at the top of my to do list is to add some natural light into my totally enclosed main bathroom. I always think that an enclosed bathroom doesn't have the same feel as a bathroom with some natural light. A window opening also gives the possibility to have natural ventilation as well. Natural light can also allow for passive warming from the sun in the winter time. I would like to add some natural light by putting in a skylight and a light well through the roofspace so that a portion of the ceiling leading up to the skylight will be very high. The bigger the better as far as the sky light is concerned. I am sure that this will change the whole character of the room, making it feel fresher and brighter. Painting the light well white or another light colour will maximise the effect of the natural light brought into the room, will light coloured fixtures and fittings. Standing in the shower looking up at the clouds is definitely going to improve my day.

The tricks to be used in the business world

posted on 10 October 2011

Going green doesn't mean that you are a vegetarian but you prefer the color to others available. If you don't like red or blue, you are free to go for the color that fits you. The same thing is applied to the roofing sector. People who offer roofing services ensure that they have gotten the instructions clearly from the user, before commencing on the anything. If the users ordered for green roofing services, the people in charge will make sure that this is exactly what they offer to the users who made the request. When things are done this way, there are no complaints or mistakes made. Everyone goes home satisfied and happy. The money spent for the processes that go through in this manner is worthwhile because nothing goes wrong. The users will be satisfied on the way the money was used and the services they receive. It is a challenging experience but when it is carried on well, it becomes successful. It is wise not to misuse any resources especially during this time when life has become very expensive.

Don’t deal alone with Plumbing Hazards when you can call an expert

posted on 22 September 2011

Plumbing hazards can happen at any given point of time and you shouldn’t put your fingers in the muck to solve it, not when it is a major fault. Always look at the plumber for help in such situations. What most homemakers don’t realize is that little knowledge is very dangerous. Very dangerous because you don’t know what dangers lurk beneath and when you enter into those dark domains, you could be injured, exasperated or worse still lose a limb trying to fix things on your own. Remember, you don’t have the certifications, or the expertise to handle major plumbing issues. Even if it is a minor plumbing issue and you try the DIY technique, you would end up paying more than what you bargained for. Hence a strong recommendation here would be to call a plumber and pay him his charges, he will take care of it and you can stay away from the mess, while he handles it all efficiently. Why play along with plumbing hazards when the plumber can show you ways to deal with it!?

Shoe Furniture – Not a Simple, Lowly Piece of Furniture

posted on 1 September 2011

Compared with other major pieces of furniture in your home that you have bought or are planning to buy for your enjoyment, buying shoe furniture would seem to be a lot less exciting. Who would want to buy a lowly piece of shoe furniture just so they could store their shoes? Would their shoes be just as good as when they store them under the bed or the sofa so they could find them the next day just as where they left them than having them placed inside cheap shoe furniture? Would their shoes be just as protected anywhere as inside a shoe cabinet? The truth is that shoe furniture if chosen according to what is needed can protect shoes and let you find them easily the next time you need to wear them. If you just keep your shoes or throw them wherever you feel like after taking them off, chances are you could damage them unintentionally or find difficulty in locating them the next day because you absentmindedly threw them aside and didn’t care where they landed. A shoe cabinet for example, will make sure that your shoes are in the same place everyday and that they are secure and protected from dust and damage within.

Choosing Kitchen Lighting Appropriately

posted on 29 August 2011

If you are deciding on what type of lighting you are going to place in your kitchen, it is very important to think about the possibilities. To help you decide on the appropriate lights you are going to place, here are some thoughts about choosing kitchen lighting effectively. You have to place general illumination in your kitchen. But first, consider the over – all design and the size of your kitchen. For general illumination, you can place a chandelier or any single light system that would be place at the center of your kitchen. This is placed at the center so the light can brighten the whole kitchen. If your kitchen is quite small, make sure not to place a large chandelier. In order to enhance the lighting system of you kitchen, you can place task lights and accent lights. Such lights can be placed above kitchen islands and behind or under cabinets. You can also place fashionable light systems to act as decorations in your kitchen.

Renovating a Dilapidated Apartment Is Not for Everyone

posted on 25 August 2011

I had an extremely dissatisfying experience in relation to my DIY project. I borrowed money from a relative to buy an inner city apartment which was rather dilapidated. The only good aspect was that I got it below the market value. I was already thinking about buying some hardwood that I could use for flooring. Yes, I thought I could renovate the apartment myself. The kitchen was horrible and thought I would take the cabinet doors off. That was the easy part. I ordered new doors and could not put them back. It was much too difficult. I thought I would replace the kitchen taps and to my horror the tap burst off and created a fountain effect. It was awful. I had to switch the water off and gradually put the tap back. Took a while to clear the excess water from the kitchen. I have decided to leave it be for now so currently my kitchen does not have any cabinet doors. I am going to seek some advice from the internet. I thought I would tackle the walls as there was a lot of superficial cracking. I bought numerous tins of paint which was recommended. There was a lot of preparation involved however after a few coats of paint it did a pretty good job at concealing the cracks. I hope to have the apartment renovated by the end of the year and realize a modest profit. I don't think I will be undertaking any DIY projects in the near future.

Always insist the moving rates are in black and white

posted on 6 August 2011

Moving rates should be given to you on the moving company’s letterhead and not through any other means. This would ensure that you have the right information and you would not have to pay any more than what you and the moving company agreed upon. The contract which has the moving rates would clearly describe in the literature, everything which is being charged for. Please read the fine print and the terms and condition of the moving company carefully, before agreeing to the rates charged by them. Remember, you need to have the best services delivered to you and for a price that matches your requirements, nothing short of it. Each moving company would have different Moving rates to choose from, so shop and compare as much as you can. When declaring your needs to the moving company, be detailed and honest, which would aid them in bringing up the right rates for you, nothing more or less. Finally, do check the company’s reputation before engaging with them!!

Creating More Floor Space By Installing Bathroom Storage Cabinets

posted on 19 May 2011

I recently moved in to a new apartment that is closer to work because it is much more convenient considering that I am so busy carrying out a big project for one of our esteemed clients. The only problem is that it is much smaller than my previous place, especially the bathroom. I took a leave of absence from work because I need to do major organizing and planning on how I can fit all my stuff there. I am not comfortable living in such a cramped apartment but I know that as long as I put in my best efforts I would be able to come up with ways to create more space. For the bathroom, I was thinking of installing a number of wall bathroom storage cabinets so that I will have more floor space and my bathroom will look more orderly not a single bathroom essential will be in sight. I just have to make do with what I have right now so that I can save up and eventually buy my own space.

THE COST OF REWIRING A HOUSE IN THE UK

posted on 8 February 2011

Money plays a big part when one wants to carry out a certain project. Availability of money or lack there of will produce different results at the end. Take for instance for one to rewire house effectively, it will mean that you will have to part with some amount of money which will vary depending on the size of the house or if you need partial or full(complete) rewiring. Outlets and fixtures will contribute to the cost as well as the copper wire. The copper wire which must be used is very expensive so it is one of the things that you should start with, this is with the advise of the electrician because you could end up with more than you can use or more than you require. Electrician costs is another area that you should ensure that you have carried out an elaborate comparison between electricians so as to settle with one whose work is good and the cost is good as well. You will also need a permit to carry out the work so do not fail to calculate how much this will cost you. The time to be taken is also important to be taken into consideration. All this will help you to calculate the cost of rewiring your house. An electrician will be of help if you need to know more.

The Importance of Garage Storage Units

posted on 4 February 2011

The garage is most probably the most ignored space in the house yet it contains the most number of items. It provides the extra space you need for storing your tools and equipment as well as stuff like out of season clothes, toys outgrown by the kids and old furniture you have moved out from the main house. If you give it some time and do some spring cleaning you will realize that the garage contains just about a lot of junk that you should be getting rid off. Once you let go of these things there is so much space you can save and it can actually make the garage very useful and functional for other purposes. The next thing you can do is invest in garage storage units. These could be in the form of additional shelf space, cabinets and container boxes with roller wheels which you can use to store and organize the stuff you chose to retain.
